Read MoreShow will be showing until the end of 2024. “The Space” located at 620 2nd street old town Eureka is open M-Sat so stop on by when it’s good for you. Get lost in Europe even if only for a short moment. We all need a nice break once in awhile.
Ever have one of those “Oh Shit” happenings? Almost blew myself up the other day. Working away like always, cutting a piece of steel and hear this “Pop” noise. What the heck was that? Look over to my acetylene tank which has flames all around the intake fitting to a full tank of gas! Yikes, holy moly!!! I quickly extinguished flame which totally surrounded the screw on fitting. Holy crap, lots of deep quick breathes scared shitless. What just happened? Had to get back on the horse and figure this problem out now, not tomorrow. Fired up the torch once again, no problem with run times shut off go back to cutting steel, POP! Once again flames surround the neck portion of acetylene tank, Not again! Extinguished the flames a second time with hands, luckily, I had gloves on. Okay that’s twice, time to stand down and figure out the cause. Problem was old torch handle, original from my beginnings which has no flash arresters. Obviously, the torch had fire still left in it and traveled back up the source of gas to tank neck fitting. It scared me so bad my thoughts were “maybe it’s time to put the torch aside” but imagine your most used tool for over 35years no more because you’re scared? Nope not happening fix the problem and get over it. I swapped out torch handle with a second torch I have that does have the flash arresters and completed an entire afternoon of controlled burns. Back to Operations Normal. This has never happened in over 35 years of burning copper. Wow! Live everyday as if it’s your last cuz one day it will be. ART ON!!!
Yet another world travel has come and gone, where did the time fly too? This one a fifty day run starting in Spain then heading east to eastern Europe. My third trip to Spain but first for Barcelona. Can’t understand the lingo but some I can. Goal once again, a sketch a day for everyday on the road. Usually, the first ten days are kinda slow then once I’m back to eating normal for other parts of the world game on. First draw was of an Antoni Gaudi facade. Note to self warm up drawing before starting a sketch of this magnitude. Quick stop to an old friend Joyce in southern France then onward to Marseilles & Nice. Nice is very nice but beware of the mosquitos. They feasted on me heavily. From there onward to Venice via Paris. They say “Venezia” please make a note of it. Train to Venezia you depart Venezia Mestre heading for Venezia S. Lucia platform unknown till last minute. Should be called the canals and step adventure. Toss in a few thousand of your closet luggage hauling friends you get the picture. This was the best place I had for food so far. Italian every night right across from hotel. Man that was good. That was until I hit Budapest. Was occupied by Soviet troops up until 1989 welcome to Soviet style buildings. Big and burly, bomb proof. You have “Buda” with the castles on one side of the Danube river. “Pest” on the other side with the big Parliament building. You get Budapest. Most excellent food here. Go directly to the big Market and your nose will point you in the right direction for good food. One nights wandering I found the best restaurant entire trip. Music was playing by a guy on fiddle, another some type string instrument and sitting outdoors streetside. Very nice. From there quick stop in Poland, yet another word for toilet check! Finally Amsterdam and yet another huge walk a thon, think my feet are going to fall off at this point. Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and doesn’t have stairs, I will take that! Van Gogh to red light district, leaning buildings too. Average stay was around six days in each place, some only a few. A week wasn’t long enough in some of these but was an amazing way to see how your life changes with a new set of goals. Go explore everyday. Sketch what you see along the way. Finish your days sketches then log in the journal days events. Too many cool things to remember you have to log it to remember. How fasicinating to go back and read that particular days events and walkabouts. Enjoy!
Been a short New York minute since my last update. Story and a Sketch came out of nowhere like all good ideas do. How many times as an Artist have I been asked or any other artist for that matter. “Where did the idea come from”. In this case pretty simple, I take from my travel journals, sketches and put together this new fantastic idea! You as the great Art consumers you are like to take your info like your morning cup o joe. You take in what you read and like to look at cool drawings or stuff whatever it may be. So I have provided you a couple cool ways of you gathering all my stuff the way you like it. If you have the need for the Kinestetic, I have lots of sculpture too, but thats another story. These are my personal ones for you to enjoy.
Arts Alive is alive and kicking, tonight same place same time, a bit cold and rainy out shouldn’t stop one from having fun! 620 2nd street Old Town Eureka 6-9pm.
Crappy WX continues to fill the redwoods with plenty of rain water to drink, they are a thirsty bunch. Am tired of the constant rain so curb my artistic abilities to the daily draw. Bair House located up on the hill in Arcata classic Queen Anne architecture built in 1888. Notice the similarities of this draw and the Pythian Castle located just down a few blocks. Both have the witches hat roof lines. Older different time period from now. Very cool but tough draws.
January not my favorite of months rainy day blues no desire to burn metal so draw. But the draw flame is barely burning struggle to get pen to paper, do what it’s supposed to do. If you don’t do it, then it won’t happen. Latest redwood Sequioa Park draw came from yet another bike ride around the park kinda MLK day.
Another year come and gone where does the time go? You can’t buy it or get it back. We held in person Arts Alive Jan 6, 2024 at the ArtCen Space in old town Eureka. Not many folks but still a good time. Recently I finished up a drawing series of fifteen new sketches all pen and ink. See January Arts Alive Virtual show for more.
Hey all, thanks for the interest in the “store” but in reality if you’re really interested I recommend contacting me directly. World travels too fast day to day to keep up with everything. I need to create ART and not fuss with stuff online. I know but, that is the real McCoy. Thanks
New idea for me, chart art has been around awhile and thought I’d like to re-visit this once again. My original airbrush “chart art” of Trinidad harbor hangs on my living room wall to this day. Everyone loves a passport stamp so I’ve come up with many of my own styles. Combining local charts with local art scenes is 100% spot on everything!
Use the correct recipe and you can make anything. Dial your Oxy/Acetylene torch to a cool 3,000 degrees Celsius. Burn some brass bend a little steel, skin a bit of copper. Pacific Princess all up front and nice.
Took a short roadtrip back to corn country - Iowa where I grew up. Not potatoes or Ohio but Corn country! Long ass ways to get there via Redding, CA - LA-Denver-Des Moines. Heck I could of made it back to Bangkok in that time! Visit of the family completed good visit. Time goes on way too fast. Next roadtrip pends. Stay tuned.
Just back from almost two full months SE Asia. Started in Bangkok, Thailand check stuff out eat soup get used to the heat. Cambodia and temple tours, talk about the heat, start early sip coconut juice right from the nut. Vietnam once again, HCMC to Vung Tau and north up the coast till I hit Da Nang. Things have changed, common thread everywhere to include rest of world? Cell phone hangs from everyone’s hand or stuck in face. I learned a lot in my travels, being nice goes a long way every single time.
